Wilton May Be Seeing an Increase in Fake IDs

WILTON, Conn. – Wilton may be seeing an increase in the number of fake driver's licenses.

Police report that after a resident handed in a wallet to the Wilton Police Department , a fake ID was found while they were determining ownership.

The owner, an 18-year-old girl from Wilton, told the police she had bought the ID from a website. Police said they gave the website address to the federal Department of Homeland Security and a task force working to control fake IDs.

“The local concern is the underage drinking and purchasing,” Wilton police Capt. John Lynch said.

Lynch said an incident two weeks ago in which a 17-year-old boy’s wallet was found to have three fake IDs was connected in that the IDs had been purchased at the same website.

“If you run the statistics over the course of a year, it’s high, it’s very high," Lynch said. "But this happens to be two isolated incidents. And obviously we’re concerned that there could be a lot of those out there.” He added that finding two so close together is a coincidence.

Both the 17-year-old and the 18-year-old were charged with misdemeanor forgery. The 18-year-old is due in court March 30 and the 17-year-old on March 28.
