Wilton Natural Gas Pipeline Project Should Be Wrapped Up Early

WILTON, Conn. -- With the help of a summer of remarkably good weather, the natural gas pipeline under construction in Wilton could be finished by mid-October, more than a month ahead of the original target date, a Yankee Gas official said Monday.

Yankee Gas project manager for Wilton Christopher Lucas says the natural gas pipeline should be completed by mid-October well ahead of its earlier late November deadline.

“We are looking at mid-October to be finished,” Christopher Luca said while a line was installed on Route 7 near Wilton High School on Monday afternoon.

On Monday, workers took a portion of the 8-inch polyethylene pipe signed by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and other officials during the summer and attached it to the pipe that was being installed in a trench alongside Route 7.

The ceremony with Malloy was held Aug. 4 outside Wilton Town Hall. Work began on the pipeline project Aug. 1.

Nearly 90 percent of the installation of the pipe that will bring natural gas into central Wilton has been completed. The underground pipeline will be 3.5 miles long.

Once the installation is complete, natural gas will be available to business, schools, residents, town facilities and institutions.

Luca said it will be up to the customers to have their hookups completed before the natural gas will be available to them.

Some customers who have had their work completed for their hookups will be able to enjoy natural gas almost immediately once the pipeline work is completed, he said.

Wilton is the first town in the state to partner with a utility through the state’s Comprehensive Energy Strategy. The strategy calls for an expansion of the state’s natural gas distribution systems to give residents and businesses the option to choose natural gas.

Town of Wilton officials estimated the town may save as much as $400,000 per year by switching to natural gas.
