The Board of Selectmen will have a special meeting March 6 to set the priorities for what needs to be fixed at the center, which has stood since 1955, as well as see how much those repairs would cost.
The roof repairs, expected to cost about $715,000, have been approved and will begin this summer. But other work needs to be done, said Judy Zucker, a member of the town’s Social Services Commission. That includes repairing bathrooms, replacing windows and a furnace and improving the appearance of the building's exterior.
The boiler was installed when the building was completed, Recreation Director Steven Pierce said. “Most of the stuff is original,” Pierce said. “You can’t get the parts” to fix everything.
The group will have to discuss the priorities, First Selectman Bill Brennan said. “We can take care of some of these initial things early so that we’re getting the benefits,” he said. “Let’s see what it will cost, what it will take to get the facility in a little better shape.”
If repaired, the building could be used for another 20 years, Zucker said.
Comstock, located at 180 School Road, is the home to the town’s recreation and social services offices as well as its senior center, which operates in an expanded section that was built in the 1990s.
