Wilton To Honor Heroes, Victims Of Sept. 11 On Tuesday

WILTON, Conn. – Wilton residents and first responders will pause Tuesday to remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001. For Wilton Assistant Fire Chief Mark Amatrudo, that’s one way people can honor those lost on that day.

“Not forgetting is not about the ceremony. It’s a way of life,” said Amatrudo, who will be one of the speakers for Tuesday’s 11th anniversary remembrance event scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Wilton Fire Department at 238 Danbury Road. “It’s about thanking the military personnel, thanking a cop or an EMT, donating your time and money or even visiting the 9-11 memorial (in New York) and saying a prayer at the reflection pool.”

Tuesday’s ceremony in Wilton will feature a procession of emergency responders and remarks from First Selectman William Brennan, Police Chief Michael Lombardo. Historically, the Wilton observance has drawn up to 75 people, Amatrudo said. Wilton lost five people in the Sept. 11 attacks.

“I think every year it comes around, we all have memories of the day,” Amatrudo said. “I remember back to the morning, and I’m sure every firefighter and emergency service worker does, as does every American.”

“It’s our generation’s Pearl Harbor, and we should not forget it,” he added, noting that people should also remember the acts of people and the spirit of Americans that followed.
