Wilton To Participate In Statewide Vigil For Newtown

WILTON, Conn. – Wilton will take part in a statewide vigil over the weekend to remember the victims of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

The location for Wilton’s portion of the unified state vigil, set for 6 p.m. Sunday, has not yet been determined. Also, Tuesday’s Wilton High School Candlelight Concert at the Clune Center will be dedicated to the memory of those who died last Friday in Newtown.

First Selectman Bill Brennan offered his respects for the victims during Monday’s Board of Selectmen meeting. Six teachers and 20 children were shot to death last Friday by a gunman, who also killed himself and who had earlier killed his mother.

“The community of Wilton’s hearts, thoughts and prayers are with our neighbors and friends in Newtown,” Brennan said. “Wilton sadly grieves with all the families who have suffered this unimaginable and tragic loss, and we have conveyed our community’s heartfelt condolences to Newtown’s officials and all the citizens of this community.”

The town has started to collect new teddy bears that will be given to Sandy Hook students, Brennan said. “Hopefully it will bring a smile to their faces and ease their pain just a little,” he said. People wishing to contribute bears may drop them off at the homes of Diane Kuczo at 52 Erdmann Lane or Lillian Cook at 6 Hunting Ridge Lane. The delivery of the bears will be coordinated with Newtown officials and local agencies, Brennan said.

Wilton has placed police officers at town public and private schools in response to the Newtown incident.
