Residents cast ballots Tuesday and Saturday in a special town election. The final vote was 733-141 in favor of the easement, according to the town.
The land is located at the intersection of Cannon and Seeley Roads.
With a conservation easement, the town purchases the development rights of the land, not the land itself, as a way to preserve the property in perpetuity.
The Keiser family retains ownership of the land but are limited in what they can do with it. Development will be prohibited from 35 acres of the lot, but two 2-acre lots will be a reserved residential area.
“We have a unique and timely opportunity to preserve 39.5 acres of prime Wilton land,” First Selectman Bill Brennan told the hundreds gathered at Tuesday night’s meeting. “Wilton’s citizens of today have an extraordinary opportunity to preserve the future for Wilton’s citizens of tomorrow.”
The total cost of the easement to the town is $2.2 million. The Wilton Land Trust will pay the remaining $300,000.
