WILTON, Conn. Aaron Ramsey has been found competent to stand trial on charges of killing his 73-year-old father, Edward Ramsey, in Wilton, according to a report from the Office of Forensic Evaluations turned over to Judge Gary White during a hearing Friday in Stamford Superior Court.
But Ramseys attorney, Howard Ehrling, said "competent is not totally indicative of sanity. Ehrling said that the competency evaluation had a contingency: the defendant may require further evaluations if psychiatric difficulties arise during the trial.
The competency evaluation determines only whether Ramsey is able to understand the charges against him and can assist counsel in his own defense. A psychiatric evaluation would determine his mental state.
Ramsey is charged with beating and stabbing of his father on May 3 in their Wilton home, according to the arrest warrant. The warrant says Ramsey told police that voices told him aliens were out to get him. The warrant also said Ramsey was told by the voices that his father had magic powers and can heal himself."
At this point, we are awaiting financial authorization for a psychiatric evaluation, Ehrling said. Outside the courtroom, Ehrling alluded to the fact that Ramsey was on a medication, but he did not say what kind.
Prosecuting attorney Richard Colangelo said that should Ramsey get further mental evaluations, the state may want to have its own evaluations performed.
During the short time Ramsey was in the courtroom, he appeared pleased to see his mother. He is due back in court July 27 and will remain in the Garner Correctional Institution in Newtown until then.
