She was born in Akron, Ohio, on Nov. 24, 1926, the daughter of Thelma Elcan and George Benton Herring. The family moved to Brownsville, Tenn., where Travers lived through her college years. She graduated from George Peabody College for Teachers in 1948. After receiving her diploma, she moved to New York City and found employment at Outdoor Life magazine as an editorial assistant. At Outdoor Life, she met her future husband, the novelist Robert Travers. They married in 1952 and lived in New Orleans before settling in Westport, Conn. They were also parents to several foster children.

Travers was a longtime member of the Saugatuck Congregational Church in Westport and enjoyed singing in the choir. A movie fan since childhood, she was also an avid reader and loved the theater. She enjoyed taking photographs, playing the piano and was fond of cats. She worked for many years in the publishing field as a copy editor and proofreader on books, medical journals and local publications such as the Westport News.

She is survived by her son, John Travers, a film editor and screenwriter in Los Angeles. Her husband predeceased her in 1974.
