Oscar's Deli, a Main Street fixture, closed up shop on Monday, Aug. 1, after 42 years in business.

Before it closed, customers gathered for one last weekend to share memories and stories with each other.

"Thank you Lee Papageorge for giving people second chances and for always loving your extended family," Oscar's Deli said in a Facebook post about the closing.

Papageorge, a nonsmoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer several months ago.

In the days since Oscar's Deli closed up shop, they donated leftover food and paper goods to the Merton House in Bridgeport, according to Facebook. The homeless shelter in Westport received the outdoor table and chairs.

And Papageorge's chair found a new home with his younger daughter, according to Facebook.

Service arrangements have not yet been announced.
