Sister Lorraine Pianka, 80, Of Wilton

WILTON, Conn. – Sister Lorraine Pianka, (Mary Camilla Pianka) of Wilton, died Sunday, April 19, after a long illness. She was 80.

She was born Oct. 14, 1934, in Melrose, Mass., to the late Walter Pianka and Estelle Sokel Pianka.

After taking her vows as a School Sister of Notre Dame in 1955, Pianka began teaching at Notre Dame Preparatory School in Baltimore.

She also taught in Catholic schools in New York and Massachusetts.

Once in Connecticut, she taught at St. Joseph High School in Trumbull and was a music teacher for Trumbull Monroe Catholic Schools.

She later served as director of religion education, retreat director and counselor in parishes in Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts.

In her retirement, Pianka resided at Villa Notre Dame in Wilton.

In 2006, she moved to Lourdes Health Care Center in Wilton.

Survivors include one brother, Walter (Ann) Pianka of Lincoln, Mass.; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends; and her community, the School Sisters of Notre Dame.

Calling hours are from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday at Villa Notre Dame, 345 Belden Hill Road, Wilton.

A Christian Wake service will be at 6 tonight.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel at Villa Notre Dame.

Burial will follow in the St. Mary Cemetery, Bethel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Atlantic-Midwest province, c/o Mission Advancement Office, 345 Belden Hill Road, Wilton, CT 06897.
