Sister Margaret McGaffney, 62, Of Wilton

WILTON, Conn. – Sister Margaret Mary McGaffney, 62, a member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Lourdes Health Care Center in Wilton.

She was born March 24, 1953, in New Hyde Park, N.Y. to Gilbert and Elsie Rupert McGaffney. 

After pronouncing her vows as a School Sister of Notre Dame in 1981, she taught at St. Leo School, Irvington, N.J., and religion at Essex Catholic Girls High School and Roselle Catholic High School from 1981-86. She then became religion teacher at the Academy of the Holy Angels in Demarest, N.J., and was appointed vocation director for the Wilton Province, residing in the formation community in Englewood, New Jersey, until 1993.

From 1993-99, she was campus minister and religion teacher at the Academy of St. Aloysius in Jersey City. Her final days in ministry were at the Academy of the Holy Angels. 

She is survived by her mother, Elsie McGaffney, of New Hyde Park; and brother, Michael McGaffney, of Arizona.

Visitation is a Tuesday, Sept. 8, from 2-8 p.m. at Villa Notre Dame, 345 Belden Hill Road, Wilton. 

There will be a wake service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. at Villa Notre Dame. 

Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Bethel.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Bracken-Donovan-Spodnick of Bridgeport.
