Sr. Leonie Mary Sheehan, 88, Of Wilton

WILTON, Conn. - Sister Leonie Mary Sheehan, a member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, of Wilton died July 19. She was 88.

Sr. Sheehan was born June 1, 1926, in Boston, and was the daughter of Cornelius Sheehan of County Cork, Ireland, and Leonie Corcoran Sheehan of Newcastle, England. After pronouncing her vows as a School Sister of Notre Dame in 1955, she began teaching at the Institute of Notre Dame in Baltimore, Md. She also taught in Catholic schools in Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island and served on the staff at St. Peter Village in Denville, N.J. She came to live at Villa Notre Dame in Wilton in 1984 and worked as medical secretary in Lourdes Health Care Center and other departments at the Villa. She moved to Lourdes in 2009.

Sr. Sheehan is survived by her sister, Miriam Balagtas of Roxbury, Mass.; several nieces, nephews; cousins; and the School Sisters of Notre Dame.

Calling hours are Tuesday, July 22 from 3 to 7:30 p.m. at Villa Notre Dame, 345 Belden Hill Road in Wilton with a Christian wake service at 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated July 23 at 10 a.m. in the Chapel at Villa Notre Dame. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Bethel.
