Norwalk Letter: In Response To Duff's Op-Ed On Hunger

NORWALK, Conn. -- The Norwalk Daily Voice accepts signed letters to the editor. Send letters to norwalk@dailyvoice.com.

To the Editor:

“No one in Fairfield County should have to be hungry” was an Opinion piece written by state Sen. Bob Duff that appeared in the May 8 edition of The Hour. The headline was an eye-catcher and one I’m sure everyone agrees with. I read the article, hoping to read something that Bob Duff was doing, or proposing to do to help ameliorate the problem -- maybe an original idea?

Instead, it was just another example of Bob Duff shamelessly hijacking a populist cause in order to gain political points; of course, with his picture attached.

Just when you think that’s the worst thing he did, it’s not. After reading the article, I went to the Person 2 Person website (p2phelps.org). I was startled to see that many of the comments Sen. Duff made were identical to the P2P website. Did he (or one of his staffers) forget to use quotes? Mr. Duff, as our longtime state legislator, you should know better and be much more careful, as your opening statements were virtually word-for-word, the findings of this wonderful local volunteer charity.

It is unfortunate that Mr. Duff failed to give due credit to this charity for its hard work, research and proof by data, of the continuing and growing demand for social assistance by hardworking families. These Norwalk and Darien families are trying to feed themselves while trying to make ends meet in this tough economy. Instead, Mr. Duff garners publicity for himself over the issue of hunger, with which few, if any, of us would disagree.

Mr. Duff, as our state senator, what concrete plans do/did you propose in the state Senate to address the issue of food insecurity?

Something tells me the real reason for Mr. Duff’s column reflects his concern about a recent opinion piece by Bill Dunne. That column pointed out Mr. Duff’s continuous voting for irresponsible taxation and spending in Hartford, regardless of its ill-effects on Norwalk and Darien. So Mr. Duff needed a puff piece …and there it was for all to see; shameful and irresponsibly written.

I expect more  from my state senator. That’s why this election year, I’ve had enough … of Duff.

Sincerely, John Bazzano
