A passerby reported that a car had hit a utility pole at about 3:35 a.m. Monday, Dec. 11, on Putnam Park Road in Bethel, police said.

Officers found the sedan that had hit the utility pole, however, the driver had left the scene on foot, police said. After a brief search, officers located the driver, police said.

While speaking with officers, the driver, identified as Grosmane Hermsdorff, admitted he had been driving the car and that he had been drinking earlier in the night, police said.

Officers conducted field sobriety tests and subsequently arrested Hermsdorff at about 4:20 a.m. on charges of driving under the influence, evading responsibility in a motor vehicle accident, and traveling too fast for conditions.

The utility pole sustained extensive damage, and Putnam Park Road was closed for hours while repairs were made, police said.
