Engines 8 and 4 responded to a motor vehicle crash on the Merritt Parkway northbound near Stanwich Road.
The car had gone off the parkway and down an embankment, firefighters said.
Firefighters had to stabilize the car, use the Hurst tool to cut the roof off and then use ropes and a basket to bring the victim back up to the highway to safety, said a statement from fire officials.
The patient was then turned over to Greenwich EMS for care and transport to the hospital.
There was no word on the driver's condition, Greenwich firefighters said.
