FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Fairfield police arrested a local man who assaulted a young boy over 12 times in a four year period.
The man, 74-year-old Robert Purcell of Fairfield, was charged sexual assault in the first degree and risk of injury to a minor after an investigation that began in October 2013 in Wallingford.
According to the report, the parents of a young boy contacted Wallingford Police that a sexual assault had taken place in the town. They told police that the person lived in Fairfield and has possibly assaulted the boy in Stratford.
In October, Wallingford detectives spoke with Purcell at the Fairfield department. The interview and other supporting evidence confirmed for police that Purcell had assaulted the victim over the four year period.
On Nov. 26 Fairfield police took Purcell into custody and was turned over to Wallingford Police on their warrant.
An investigation also began in Fairfield by Detective Beth Irizarry. She found evidence supporting the fact that an incident had also taken place in Fairfield at Purcell's home on Warde Terrace in February 2011. It was described as the most serious of all the events.
Purcell came to the Fairfield Police Department Friday morning after learning there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest. He was charged with sexual assault in the first degree and risk of injury to a minor and held on a $100,000 bond for a Jan. 10 court date in Bridgeport.
