WILTON, Conn. -- A man from the Bronx, N.Y., has been arrested after police said he used 13 counterfeit $20 bills to buy handbags at a store in Wilton.

Tabari Bailey, 27, was arrested while making a court appearance on July 29 at Norwalk Superior Court. He was charged with first-degree forgery and sixth-degree larceny in the Wilton incident and held on $95,000 bond.

Bailey is accused of buying three handbags with a total purchase price of $468 on April 2 at the TJ Maxx at 14 Danbury Road in Wilton, police said.

He paid the amount due in cash, police said.

But store management, working with a loss prevention investigator, later determined that the cash presented contained 13 $20 bills that were counterfeit, police said.

The Wilton Police Department worked with the U.S. Secret Service in identifying the suspect from video surveillance and other similar incidents across the state.
