WILTON, Conn. — A Norwalk man charged with robbing a Wilton bank and suspected of robbing banks across Fairfield County confessed to police and said he was mentored by a convicted bank robber, according to the Stamford Advocate.

Joseph Boccuzzi, 34, was arrested Friday and charged with second-degree robbery and first-degree larceny in connection with the Feb. 24 robbery of the Fairfield County Bank on Danbury Road in Wilton. He was also arraigned Monday for robbing the First County Bank in Stamford twice, according to the Stamford Advocate.

Police arrested Boccuzzi after an investigator saw the getaway car from the Stamford bank robbery at a local car dealership and tracked the owner, who said that she sometimes let Boccuzzi use it, according to the Stamford Advocate.

Police had also suspected that the same car used in the Wilton bank robbery had been used in an attempted Fairfield bank robbery, where a suspect showed up with a mask and duffel bag but was turned away when the bank turned out to be closed.

According to the affidavit obtained by the Stamford Advocate, Boccuzzi admitted to police that he robbed the banks, and said that Spero Moschos was his mentor. Moschos was convicted of robbing a Stamford bank in 2009 and served 54 months in prison, according to the Stamford Advocate.

Boccuzzi is a single father with one child who said he was strapped for cash, according to the Stamford Advocate. At one point he even sold his Lyme disease medication, the Stamford Advocate reported.

Boccuzzi did not enter a plea on Monday and was held on $750,000 bond, according to the Stamford Advocate.
