NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- Kate Regan of New Canaan pleaded guilty Friday to negligent homicide with a motor vehicle and evading responsibility in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident three years ago, Patch.com reported on its website.
Regan was sentenced to five years of probation and 300 hours of community service after pleading guilty before state Superior Court Judge Maureen Dennis in Norwalk, the report said. Prosecutors wanted her to serve prison time, but the family of the elderly victim asked for leniency so Regan's young children would not suffer, the report said.
Krishna Jayaraman, 82, was killed in front of his Oenoke Road home. New Canaan police have said Regan was driving a 2008 Infiniti QX56 when she struck Krishna S. Jayaraman, 82, while he was at the mailbox outside his home Aug. 18, 2010. Jayaraman died from his injuries at Norwalk Hospital. Police arrested Regan on Nov. 3, 2010, after a lengthy investigation.
Regan and her husband are also facing a civil suit filed by Jayaraman’s family in Stamford Superior Court.
