Norwalk Man Pleads Guilty In Connection To Wilton Bear Killing

Police had arrested 34-year-old Daniel Moran of Norwalk and 28-year-old Antonio Lio of Wilton following the Sept. 16 killing of two black bears in Wilton. Environmental Conservation Police said they received a tip that an archery hunter had illegally shot and killed two bears, and said they found Lio and Moran carrying bear skin, head and paws in a backpack.

Moran pleaded guilty to conspiracy to illegally taking a bear, and was handed a $500 fine and had his hunting license suspended, according to the Hour.

Lio, who is facing two counts of illegal taking of black bear and fourth-degree negligent hunting, applied for an accelerated rehabilitation, wherein he would have charges against him dismissed if he completes a rehabilitation program and does not commit any more crimes, according to the Hour.

Protesters greeted the two as they entered the courthouse in Norwalk on Thursday, according to the Hour. Several Wilton residents had expressed anger after news of the killings broke, and many wanted to see the maximum sentenced imposed on Moran and Lio.

Lio's case was continued until Jan. 10, according to the Hour.
