NORWALK, Conn. — A deaf mute man was arrested after he pointed what initially appeared to be a gun at an officer and then threw a stick at a police cruiser Tuesday evening, Norwalk police said.

Kevin Kenney, 39, of 5 Sniffen St., was charged with two counts of second-degree breach of peace and one count of interfering with an officer.

Police were called at 5:30 p.m. to Sniffen Street after a woman complained about an interaction she had with a stick-holding Kenney, Sgt. Rafael Fonseca said.

A short time later, a second officer spotted Kenney walking backward in the Crescent Street area, Fonseca said.

Kenney turned around, assumed a shooting stance and pointed the object he was holding at the officer, police said. Unsure of what Kenney was holding, the officer pulled his weapon out of the holster but pointed it at the ground, police said.

Kenney then put both arms in the air, and the officer could see that the object was a stick and not a firearm, police said. The officer then put his weapon back into the holster, police said.

The suspect then ran at the cruiser, threw the stick at it and then reach into a bag he was carrying, police said. In an attempt to defuse the situation, the officer grabbed Kenney and took him into custody, police said.

His bond was set at $1,250, and his first scheduled court appearance is March 24.
