Heidi Johnson, 51, of 40 Main St., was charged with first-degree assault. Her bond was set at $25,000, and she was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

Police said it was Johnson who called them to report an unwanted guest who was very intoxicated at her residence. When officers got off the elevator on the fourth floor of building, they heard a man screaming and yelling in the hallway while bleeding heavily from his face, police said.

Officers saw that he was holding a combination metal cane/walker and appeared to be leaning against a wall for support, police said. He had also suffered cuts below and above his eye, police said.

"He was having a difficult time keeping himself on his feet without leaning against wall, and screaming and yelling and pointing at an apartment door," Lt. Paul Resnick said.

He told officers that Johnson had hit him in the face and swung his cane at the apartment door, police said. Officers were able to calm him down before he began yelling again, police said.

“Then he started yelling again and unintentionally spit blood in the officer’s face while he was yelling,” Resnick said.

The officer called for backup and an ambulance while trying to restrain the victim and provide immediate medical care, police said. The victim said he had a romantic relationship with the woman, admitted he was drunk but said he didn't deserve to be attacked, police said.

The woman opened the apartment door after repeated knocking by police and began incoherently yelling at the officer, Resnick said.

“She's yelling at the officer: 'I know my rights and that (expletive deleted) kept trying to get in. It wasn't against the law me hitting him,' " Resnick reported that she is alleged to have said.

The officer asked the woman what she hit the man with.

"She tells the officer 'with my fist and with this,'" getting a blood-covered metal rod from within her apartment, he said.

She told the officer she took it from the man and then hit him with it, police said. The metal rod was broken off from the man's cane, police said.

Police had to handcuff the man to the stretcher to prevent injury to himself and to police and EMS personnel, Resnick said.

"There was quite the mess there, there was splattered blood on the walls and the floor of the hallway," he said.
