At around 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, officers were dispatched to the area of TD Bank at 54 Post Road on a report of a suspicious car. The caller told police that the black BMW with tinted windows had been backed into a spot for more than an hour. At one point, it crossed the Post Road to another lot, but then a short time later it returned and drove through the TD Bank lot at a slow rate, the caller told police.
Officers arrived and found the car in the lot across the street from TD Bank, police said. It was stopped and the three occupants were detained and questioned. Police said that K9 Kenny conducted a free-air sniff of the exterior of the car, and indicated the presence of drugs. A search of the car turned up a bag of marijuana, as well as several checks with various names written for various amounts, and a credit card scanning device, according to police.
The three occupants were identified as 18-year-old Shemar Joachim of Jamaica, NY, 19-year-old Shabazz Baptiste of Valley Stream, NY, and 18-year-old Jaylen White of Jamaica, NY. As police attempted to place the three under arrest, Joachim and Baptiste fled the scene, engaging officers in a foot pursuit, according to police reports. They were eventually caught and detained on the property of a nearby office building, police said.
A search of all three of them revealed numerous credit cards that did not belong to any of them, police said. They were later checked and it was determined that they had been reprogrammed with account numbers unassociated with the account number on the car, and often from different banking institutions than the card's issuer, according to police.
All three suspects were placed under arrest and charged with unlawful reproduction of a credit card, fourth-degree larceny, unlawful use of a scanning device, credit card theft, conspiracy to reproduction of a credit card and possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana. Joachim and Baptiste were additionally charged with interfering with an officer.
The three were held on $25,000 bonds and given court dates of Nov. 27.
