The car fire, which tied up traffic in both directions of I-95 at about mid-day, was the result of a rear-end collision between an SUV and a cargo van, said Deputy Fire Chief Edward Prescott. The person was pulled from the SUV, he said.
The accident and fire occurred on I-95 northbound between Exits 13 and 14, and was reported to State Police at 11:49 a.m. Thursday, he said.
Norwalk firefighters attacked the blaze from the southbound lanes due to it size, with state police stopping traffic, Prescott said.
Traffic was reduced to one lane northbound and two lanes southbound as emergency crews battled the fire and attended to the injured people, he said.
The two occupants of the van and the driver of the SUV were transported to Norwalk Hospital by Norwalk paramedics and Darien EMS.
Their conditions appeared to be non-life-threatening, Prescott said.
The highway was fully opened by 12:43 p.m. after the blaze was extinguished.
