BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — A woman is dead and two pedestrians were “severely injured” Thursday after a driver fled from a State Trooper on Interstate 95, speeding down Bridgeport streets until crashing, police said.

At about 1 p.m., an officer from State Police Troop G was pursuing a black Infiniti when it stopped in a southbound traffic lane on the highway, State Trooper Kelly Grant said.

When the trooper asked the driver, who has not been identified, to move to the shoulder, the man sped off the ramp at Exit 26 to South Street, she said.

The trooper gave chase and saw the suspect plow into a car driven by a woman at Iranistan and Railroad avenues, Grant said.

The trooper stopped to treat the woman and saw the suspect as he continued to drive, hitting two nearby adult pedestrians and then fleeing on foot, Kelly said.

While the trooper was tending to the victims, a state K-9 unit tracked the suspect to a nearby house, where he was placed under arrest and taken to the hospital, Kelly said.

The woman driver was treated at the scene, but she was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.

Grant said the two pedestrians suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Av Harris, a city spokesman, said they were “severely injured” and transported to a hospital.

At  about 4 p.m., Bridgeport police were still on the scene, working to reconstruct and investigate the crash. More details are expected as the investigation continues. The intersection reopened to traffic at about 5:15 p.m. for rush hour, state police said.

Sybil Hopkins, who lives on Iranistan, said she didn’t see the crash, but she heard the commotion.

“So many sirens kept going off,” she said. “I’m, like, something terrible has happened.”
