Wilton Police are investigating the vandalism on a tree in Quarry Head State Park at 768 Ridgefield Road, where "PROM?" was carved into the trunk.
The carving covers an area of 18 inches by 12 inches, and officials are concerned it could harm or kill the tree due to the severity and the depth of the cut. Wilton police believe it was done about one to two weeks ago.
Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call the Wilton police at 203-834-6260.
In the 16th-century, the word "Croatoan" is part of the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the English settlers in the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island in North Carolina. Its 118 men, women and children were last seen in 1587. When a relief expedition arrived from England in 1590, the entire group had disappeared. The only clue found was the word "Cro" carved into a tree and the word "Croatoan" carved into a fence post around the deserted village.
