The man, a resident of a home in the area of Hulda Hill Road, owned the AR-15 rifle that was taken out of the home after the man surrendered peacefully at about 4 p.m. Wednesday,  police said.

Police and members of the Southwest Emergency Response Team went to the home after police received a call from a relative saying the man was despondent and threatened to hurt himself.

During the standoff, several neighbors were evacuated and school buses were blocked from making stops in the area of the home.

The man, whose name was not released, was taken to Norwalk Hospital for evaluation.

Wilton Police Capt. John Lynch said he does not expect any gun charges to be filed because the rifle was properly registered.
