After grabbing multiple fur coats and leaving the store without paying, the suspect jumped into a waiting sedan with at least one other passenger in it, police said. The vehicle left on Greenwich Avenue at a high rate of speed, Greenwich police Capt. Robert Berry said.
Witnesses provided Greenwich police officers with a description of the vehicle, and it was soon spotted by New York State on Interstate 95 south near New Rochelle by New York State Police, Berry said.
State Police officers pulled over the car, and the driver got out, police said. However, the passenger slid into the driver's seat, raced away but crashed soon afterward, police said.
The second suspect fled from the crash scene on foot and was still being sought Wednesday afternoon, police said.
No one was injured in Connecticut and the extent of any injuries in New York State is unknown, police said.
The first suspect is in custody of the New York State Police.
Police departments in both New York State and Connecticut will press charges in the case, police said.
The case remains under investigation, and police continue to search for the second suspect, said Greenwich Police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray.
