Teen Falls Asleep Behind Wheel, Hits Tree & Mailbox, Wilton Police Say

WILTON, Conn. — A 17-year-old boy who fell asleep behind the wheel of his Jeep Patriot struck a tree and a mailbox on Danbury Road on Thursday, Aug. 4, Wilton police said.

The accident happened at about 4:58 p.m. as the 17-year-old from Cold Spring, N.Y., was heading north on Danbury Road near Seeley Road, police said. 

After the Jeep hit the mailbox and tree, it lost two left tires and continued for another 165 feet straight off the road, police said. The Jeep came to rest in the northbound lanes of the roadway, police said.

The teen was not injured in the crash, but the Jeep was towed from the scene.

He was charged with reckless driving and failure to drive in the proper lane. He is due in court on Aug. 18.
