WILTON, Conn. -- A Wilton man crashed into a utility pole, breaking it in two a short distance from his home, police said as they charged him with drinking and driving after the early morning accident Tuesday.

Timothy Maher, 24, of 56 St. John's Road, slammed into the utility pole in front of 14 St. John's Road at 12:20 a.m. with his 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer, police said.

Maher was standing outside his car at the pole, which had been severed at its base, when officers arrived, police said.

He was charged with driving under the influence and failing to drive in a marked lane. He was released to appear in state Superior Court in Norwalk on April 30.

Police didn't report any injuries.
