Wilton Police: Beware Of Prize Winner Telephone Scam

WILTON, Conn. — Wilton police are warning residents about a telephone scam that targeted at least one resident last week, police said.

An elderly resident contacted police on March 22 after receiving a suspicious call from the following number: 1-876-897-2570. On the other end, a person with a Jamaican accent told the resident they had won a prize, police said.

However, in order to claim the “prize,” the resident was requested to purchase gift cards from PayPal, an e-commerce website from which people can make payments or make money transfers, police said.

Police urge residents to ignore calls of a similar nature if they receive them. Most important, residents should not give out any personal information, police said.

Anyone who receives a similar call is asked to contact police at 203-834-6260.
