WILTON, Conn., -- A cashier at a Wilton supermarket was illegally using his unwitting customers to fund gift cards for his own use, Wilton police said.

Jabari Dear, 20, who worked as a cashier at Stop & Shop in Wilton, would charge a gift card to a customer at the end of an order, police said. Dear counted on the customer to not be aware of the extra charge, and then he would then keep the card for himself, police said.

However, the scheme ended in failure for Dear, who was was arrested Sunday afternoon, police said.

During a search, officers also discovered a small amount of marijuana in Dear's possession, hidden in a sock he was wearing, police said.

Dear, of 150 Main St., Apt. 1A, is charged with illegal use of a credit card, third-degree larceny and possession of marijuana. He is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Norwalk on April 21.
