WILTON, Conn. -- Wilton police began investigating after two preteen girls said they fled on their bikes from a middle-aged man driving a cleaning business van who offered them leftover Halloween candy on Nov. 5 on Rivergate Drive.

The story takes a baffling turn as police said that based on the information the 9- and 10-year-old girls gave them, officers identified what they believed to be the business, which has locations throughout the Fairfield County area.

Officers spoke to an employee there who said he was in the area on that date making a delivery, police said. The employee noticed the two girls on the bicycles but denied offering any candy to them or speaking to them, police said.

A search of the vehicle failed to turn up any Halloween candy, Lt. Donald Wakeman said.

The girls were shown the van the police identified, but they said it didn’t appear to be the same van, police said.

Also, the physical description of the driver given by the girls didn’t quite fit the driver, Wakeman said.

“The bottom line is they can’t support that the man that we identified and the driver is one and the same,” he said.

Wakeman admitted he was a bit mystified by the case in which so many elements are similar but where charges cannot be filed because there is not enough evidence.
