WILTON, Conn. The Wilton Police Department is cautioning residents to take care when ordering things on websites like eBay and Craigslist.
A resident reported a suspected scam to police on June 10 while attempting to sell an item on Craigslist.
Wilton Police Captain John Lynch described the scam this way: The buyer sends a check for well over the sale price and asks for the difference to be returned to them. When the [buyer's] check goes through the process, its bogus, Lynch said.
He said this type of crime is very common and that the resident who reported the scam recognized that something was hinkey and did not get duped.
If it is too good to be true, thats the bottom line with these, Lynch said.
The department recommends that if you suspect something is wrong, send the check back and request a new one, and always wait for the check to clear to verify that it is not fraudulent.
Wilton detectives are still investigating this and similar Internet crimes.
