Carter beat out Stamford businessman August Wolf, a 1984 Olympian in the shot put, and Darien businessman Jack Orchulli, who was the losing Republican candidate in the 2004 Senate election, for the Republican nomination.

Carter was declared the winner with 907 votes, CT Mirror said, with Wolf at 123 and Orchulli at 20, below the threshold to force an August primary.

In 20101, Blumenthal defeated WWE co-founder Linda McMahon, who spent $50 million on the race.

Carter currently represents the 2nd General Assembly District covering Bethel, Danbury, Newtown and Redding. He is the Ranking Member on the legislature’s General Law Committee, and is a member of the Education and Finance, Revenue & Bonding committees.

Carter, the son of a police officer and a nurse, earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science at Bowling Green University and a master’s degree in aeronautical science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

While in college, Carter joined the U.S. Air Force ROTC program – a move that eventually saw him become a C-130 “Hercules” pilot. Carter served in Saudi Arabia in support of operation Desert Storm, and he also served two tours in Bosnia with NATO. Additionally, he participated in missions supporting this country’s drug interdiction program in Central America. His military dedication earned him the Meritorious Service Medal.

Carter is a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and also volunteers on behalf of the Air Force to mentor students interested in pursuing military careers.

He has two children.
