Foley, who narrowly lost to Gov. Dannel Malloy in the 2010 election, could be challenged in an Aug. 12 primary by his two closest competitors.
At the Republican Party state convention held over the weekend, the final tally was 57 percent for Foley, 22 percent for Boughton and 17.72 percent for McKinney. A total of 15 percent was needed to qualify for a primary.
The GOP candidate will face off against Malloy, the incumbent Democrat in the November election. The incumbent governor won the endorsement of the state Democratic Party's convention, which was also held over the weekend, according to the Hartford Courant.
"The mere possibility of four more years under the ‘leadership’ of Dannel Malloy should send a shiver down the spines of folks who have built lives for themselves here, people who today can barely afford to live in the communities where they grew up," said GOP state Chairman Jerry Labriola Jr.
“Gov. Malloy promised us he’d guide our state down a different path as he criticized his predecessors. Today, despite his record ‘shared sacrifice’ tax hikes, our states finances are tenuous at best. He has used the same budget gimmicks he campaigned against, and he’s pointing fingers at everyone but himself—ignoring the fact that life for residents has grown more difficult, and expensive, on his watch. Dannel Malloy has shown he is simply incapable of leading a Connecticut Comeback.”
Malloy and Foley are in a dead heat in the race, according to the latest Quinnipiac Poll. A poll of residents in March put the tie at 42 percent each.
