The video features one woman who lost her parents in a robbery at a jewelry store in Fairfield, and another whose son was shot and killed in Bridgeport on Christmas Eve, calling attention to smaller but deadly crimes, said Himes (D-4th District).
Himes, who walked out of a moment of silence on the U.S. House floor for the victims of the Orlando shooting as a sign of protest about the failure to act on gun legislation, said he aims to change the minds of people across the country.
"I'm just so sick of the moments of silence that are so smug and self-serving," he said. "I'll continue to walk out until real change happens."
Himes also took part in the recent sit-in at the House, but he doesn't believe mass sit-ins or protests will make the difference.
"We have a long march, minds to change and people to activate," he said. "It's going to take the faith community to help us make this happen, especially in places like North Carolina, Mississippi and Oklahoma."
On the video, back in Fairfield, the daughter tells of her life without her parents and all of things they are missing because of the senseless violence. And in Bridgeport, a mom tells of how she worries for her other two children. And Anthony Bennett, pastor of Mt. Aery Baptist Church, talks about the devastation in the community after such acts of violence.
"It's just a small video," said Himes. "But maybe someone will watch it, and it will make a difference."
