The U.S. Department of Transportation indicated that the fund will fall below a sustainable level Aug. 1 and could put as many as 700,000 jobs at risk, unless Congress acts.
“The Highway Trust Fund is absolutely essential to Southwest Connecticut’s transit projects and economy, and allowing it to run dry is simply not an option," Himes said in a statement. "This legislation will protect hundreds of thousands of jobs nationwide and critical transportation projects in our region, but we must do better.
"I will continue pushing for long-term investments to address our nation’s critical need to build a 21st century transportation infrastructure that creates jobs and helps our businesses compete in the global economy.“
A recent White House report, released in an effort to persuade Congress to pass a $302 billion bill to improve infrastructure around the nation, says Connecticut has the worst roads and bridges in the country.
The report said that 41 percent of roads in Connecticut are in poor condition and that 35 percent of the 4,218 bridges in the state were structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.
