Wilton Voters Approve $107 Million In Town, Education Spending

WILTON, Conn. – Wilton got the go-ahead to spend nearly $107.1 million over the next fiscal year as registered voters passed the budgets of both the Board of Education and the Board of Selectmen during the Annual Town Meeting.

Last Tuesday and Saturday, voters hit the polls to vote on an overall fiscal year 2014 budget of $107,087,337. A total of 514 residents voted in favor of the budget, while 278 voted it was too high, the registrar of voters reported. Another 13 residents voted that the budget was too low.

The Board of Selectmen’s town budget of $30,947,232 represents a 1.98 percent increase over the current year’s spending. The Board of Education’s $76,140,105 spending package represents a 2.82 percent increase.

Of the 11,647 registered voters in town, only 806 —about 6.9 percent — turned out to vote, according to the registrars' office.

In addition to the budget, residents also voted to approve five capital bonded projects totaling $2.5 million. The projects include replacing the boiler at the Gilbert & Bennett Community Cultural Center; replacing the boiler and heating system at Comstock Community Center; and converting the boilers at Wilton High, Middlebrook and Cider Mill schools for natural gas.

On the Gilbert & Bennett project, 513 residents voted for it and 287 voted against it. The Comstock project passed, 574-228, and the school boiler conversion projects passed, 615-186.
