Each year the zoo invites schools, art classes, scouts and classrooms to create their own one-of-a-kind scarecrows to exhibit in front of the zoo’s greenhouse throughout October and November.

Guests at Boo at the Zoo on Oct. 29 voted for their favorites in four categories.

“Children’s imaginations make this event so much fun for everyone,” said Zoo Director Gregg Dancho. “Every year we can’t wait to see what the students come up with, and we’re never disappointed!”

This year’s Best Whimsical Scarecrow went to “The Mermaid” created by a group from Classical Studies Magnet Academy Annex in Bridgeport taught by Tara Eschert. It was sponsored by Aquarion Water Co

“Unnamed” created by Theresa Manus’ class at Long Hill Elementary School in Shelton took Best Traditional Scarecrow. David Grant Catering sponsored the scarecrow.
