Full-Day Kindergarten Plan Gets The OK In Wilton

WILTON, Conn. – Starting next year, Wilton kindergartners will have full-day classes, five days a week—unless parents choose otherwise. The five full-day kindergarten plan for Miller-Driscoll School was approved Thursday night by the Board of Education, with an opt-out provision for parents.

This provision was created for parents who don’t want their children to participate in the full-day program and instead favor half-days, according to a Board of Education document.

Under the opt-out provision, students will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m. every day and families will be responsible for providing transportation at departure time.

“To reduce the loss of instructional time and create a manageable pick-up process, students will be dismissed from their classrooms and sent to the school office for dismissal,” the document states. “Students will then be picked up and signed out at the front office.”

Families who want to opt-out of the full-day program will be required to do so during the May kindergarten orientation. At any time during the school year, students can be removed from the opt-out provision to participate in the full-day program.

The full-day program is estimated to save approximately $150,000 in transportation costs and will benefit student’s educational and social development, the document said.

“As children have more time to engage in daily literacy and language instruction, they will demonstrate higher levels of reading and writing performance over time,” the document states. “The opportunity to participate fully in child-centered, creative activities will enhance the development of students’ social/emotional skills.”
