Students in Wilton Show Off Their Tech Skills

WILTON, Conn. – For three years, the Wilton School system has been showing off how it uses technology in the classroom with a Tech Expo . This year it also showed how students use technology outside the classroom.

DJ and techno musician, Dubberman, also known as 16-year-old high school junior Mitchell Rothstein, showed how he creates his own music through the computer.

“I don’t know how to play what I call ‘analogue’ instruments,” Rothstein said, though he has seven years of classical piano playing under his belt. Creating his songs takes time, he explained, and he learned how to do it outside the classroom.

It's the same thing for junior Adam Toris, 17. Using a program called AppBuilder on his Mac computer, Toris was able to create and sell an iPhone app called “iSmash Spiders.”

“I just thought it would be really cool to make my own app,” Toris said. So he started playing with coding and design and AppBuilder. He’s had iSmash Spiders on sale through the Apple AppStore for $0.99 for the last year and said that he’s already made more than $500. Toris said he’s finishing another three apps.

In the classrooms teachers and students demonstrated how technology is used during class. Third-grade teacher Corinne Taylor showed a SMARTBoard lesson she created for her class.

“It takes a few hours to make a lesson, but ideally there are several other teachers working on it,” Taylor said. The idea is that eventually all the teachers will have access to everyone else’s SMARTBoard lesson plans.”

The expo, according to Mathew Hepfer , director of technology for Wilton schools, was an idea that came up at the Technology Advisory Committee. It was a tight budget year, he explained, and the district was looking for ways to explain why the technology was useful in the classrooms. “It’s really just showing what we do,” he said.
