Swing's the Thing at Wilton Jazz Festival

The swinging sounds of Count Basie, Duke Ellington and hometown favorite Dave Brubeck echoed through the Wilton High School theater Friday as the 35th annual Wilton High School Jazz Symposium played through the afternoon and evening. The gathering brought together bands from a half-dozen local schools, including Staples, Norwalk, Brien McMahon and host Wilton.

The bands performed half-hour sets and then received advice and critiques from the members and director of the Bucknell University jazz band, the featured ensemble of the night. Three Wilton High alumni — Jon Como, Paul Quinn and Doug Bogan — are members of the Bison ensemble, and each performed a solo during one of the band’s six numbers. The evening concluded with a performance by the Berkshire Big Band, whose members include four band directors as well as an 85-year-old member of the Jazz Hall of Fame.
