Rachel S. Pak and Derek A. Thomas took the fall 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as juniors.

More than 1.5 million students took the exam and 16,000 were named semifinalists, a pool which represents less than one percent of high school seniors.

Pak and Thomas now have the chance to compete for Merit Scholarship awards that will be offered next spring, school officials said.
