WILTON, Conn. — The Wilton Board of Education on Tuesday signed a contract with TRC Cos. Inc. of Windsor to assess indoor air quality at Miller-Driscoll School, the district’s oldest school building.

TRC will conduct a detailed analysis throughout the school building that will consist of visual inspection observations along with baseline IAQ air sampling, school board Chairman Bruce Likly said. The firm will also test for radon.

“TRC is a highly respected independent firm, with a proven record in analyzing IAQ in school buildings,” Likly said. “I am pleased we have signed a contract, and that TRC can begin preparations for its work at Miller-Driscoll.”

According to TRC’s proposal, sampling will include “direct instrument readings (temperature, CO, CO2, total particulates and humidity) and Air-O-Cell microbial air samples (fungi/spore counts) with required ambient and field blank samples.”

Likly said the work is expected to be completed by the end of March.

The testing is in response to parents' concerns regarding indoor air quality at Miller-Driscoll School after a number of complaints from students and staff were made.

The school's last air quality tests, conducted in November, were rejected by the state Department of Public Health for not following official procedures.

The board voted unanimously to award the $21,590 contract to TRC.

The district will receive a report detailing TRC’s analysis, and the report will also be made available to the public, Likly said.

“I am pleased the [Board of Education] approved TRC as our independent air quality consultant, and believe it is the exact firm we need to provide the in-depth, independent analysis that Superintendent [Gary] Richards has recommended,” he said.

Copies of TRC’s scope of work, along with information about the firm’s background, are available on the Wilton school district website.
