Wilton Kids Read to Raise Money for Schools

WILTON, Conn. – You can help raise money for the Wilton Education Foundation , while also encouraging children to read.

Wilton’s elementary school students at Miller-Driscoll and Cider Mill can start the Reading Rocks! challenge by setting their own goals for reading independently, finishing a set number of books, reading aloud to someone or having someone read to them.

Participating students write their commitment to reading on their pledge form, which went home Wednesday, and then get pledges from family and friends in support of the program.

The pledge forms and donations are due back April 11. Students have from April 25 to May 6 to complete their goals.

For every pledge a student gets, he or she will receive a chance to win a Kindle Fire, the Amazon ereader. One Kindle Fire will be awarded at Miller-Driscoll, and one at Cider Mill.

“Our goal is to get children excited about reading and to give them incentive to take an adventure through a book, while giving back to their school at the same time,” said Julie Steckel, Wilton Education Foundation board member.

Tally boards posted around the school will show which grade or house has the highest percent participation. The grade at Miller-Driscoll with the highest percent of participation will earn an extra recess. The house at Cider Mill with the highest percent of participation will earn a homework-free day.

All the proceeds of the fundraiser will go to the public schools.
