Wilton Opens Outdoor Fitness Center At High School

WILTON, Conn. – Residents looking for a new place to shape up will soon be able to work out at a new outdoor fitness center at Wilton High School.

The center officially opens Tuesday at 11 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. It will include an elliptical cross trainer, a rowing machine, an air walker and a cross country ski machine. The pieces include instructions and can be used by anyone 15 or older. They will be at the stadium, south of the home stands adjacent to the concession stand.

The Wilton Family YMCA and the town collaborated on the project, said Bob McDowell, executive director of the YMCA. The Y contributed about $14,000 from a $50,000 grant it received from the National YMCA through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to combat childhood obesity. The town installed the equipment.

The fitness center complements other Wilton YMCA projects that encourage physical fitness, McDowell said, such as hosting community forums on healthy eating, adding new playground equipment at Cider Mill School and bike racks around town.

“[The fitness center] really adds an element that’s unique for Fairfield County,” he said. “We know that parents’ behavior is a very strong role model for children, and a goal of the equipment center is to encourage teens and adults to maintain good cardiovascular health through physical activity.”

First Selectman Bill Brennan said: “We are very excited to open the Fitness Center to provide another opportunity for Wilton residents to improve their health and wellness.”

Additional information about health and fitness programs offered by Wilton Parks and Recreation can be found on the town’s website or by calling the Parks and Recreation office at 203-834-6234.
