Wilton Parents: Start School After Labor Day

WILTON, Conn. – Some parents think Wilton Public Schools opened too early and that the new year should begin after Labor Day.

Classes at Wilton Schools began on Monday, a week before the last major summer holiday, as thousands of students said goodbye to days of playing all day and sleeping in and hello to new friends and teachers. But several commenters on our Facebook page insist the 2012-13 school year began a week too soon.

Janell Stimac Buerge Federico favors a post-Labor Day start, saying that “a lot of families would like to go on vacation the last weekend of summer and they either don't put their kids in school those days or miss out on a family vacation.”

Melinda D'Onofrio also supported starting after the holiday. “I too think the schools should start after Labor Day. Let families finish off the summer together. It just doesn't make any sense to begin before,” she said.

The Wilton Board of Education sets the school calendar a year-and-a-half in advance based on a recommendation of Wilton Schools Superintendent Gary Richards. Tim Canty, assistant superintendent of schools, said the district always starts school prior to Labor Day for a number of reasons.

“We like the idea of getting a full week in before the (Labor Day) weekend,” Canty said. “We feel the 5-day week gives us a good starting point and (students) benefit from a full week.”

Canty also cited the concerns about potentially losing school days to snow and other inclement weather. Wilton Schools were closed for about a week at the start of the year following Hurricane Irene. Starting before the holiday “gives us wiggle room on the back end,” Canty added, adding that the fall sports season begins this weekend.

Scott Martin said he would like to see the year start after the holiday, as it did prior to the 2000-01 school year. “School before labor day is horrible, should start after for sure!” Martin said on our Facebook page.

However, Nadine Jones can’t see why people are complaining. “OMG this is nuts who cares really if they go back before or after when the truth is the have to make a certain amount of days!!!! so sick of Big adult cry babies!!!!”
