WILTON, Conn. – Deferring work at the Wilton High School field house and reducing spending on employee benefits helped the Wilton Board of Education craft a proposed 2013-14 budget with an increase of less than 4 percent.

The board finalized its $76.89 million spending proposal for the next school year with a unanimous vote Thursday night. The budget now goes to the Wilton Board of Finance on March 27.

The school board agreed to make more than $410,000 in reductions from its preliminary proposal to get to a 3.83 percent increase for the current spending plan. Town officials had asked the school board to submit a budget that was 4 percent or lower. The original $77.3 million proposal was a nearly 4.4 percent increase over 2012-2013.

Several cuts were made, including $154,000 in health benefits, $25,000 from the Wilton High School athletics budget and $90,000 that was intended for painting the Wilton High fieldhouse and for wrestling mat storage. The board also agreed to hold off on spending $33,000 for new textbooks.
