WILTON, Conn. – Attendance at Wilton Public Schools dipped the last three days of last week, days that were originally part of the planned February vacation, but were added to make up for days lost to storms.

Wilton High School, which has an enrollment of 1,306 students, had 262 absences on Feb. 20, 216 on Feb. 21 and 248 on Feb. 22.

Middlebrook School had 202 of its 1,059 students out of class last Wednesday, 166 on Thursday and 186 on Friday. Cider Mill School, with an enrollment of 1,005, had 164 students away from school on Wednesday, 141 on Thursday and 158 out when doors opened on Friday.

While Miller-Driscoll School had 159 students absent last Wednesday, 137 on Thursday and 135 last Friday. The school has an enrollment of 893.

The attendance figures, released Wednesday, indicate many students continued with their planned breaks instead of going to school during make-up days created by Hurricane Sandy and a recent blizzard.

The Wilton Board of Education amended the district calendar in December following the loss of school days to inclement weather. The school board is weighing adjustments to the 2013-14 schedule to accommodate for possible pre-winter cancellations.

A lot of students in Wilton had an electrician training for this summer and others have graduated this school year for whom I congratulate them.

Obviously a lot of famlies made their plans early so who can blame them for following through instead of losing deposits, reservations and changing transportation options for a fee. While Wilton puts a high value on education, the cost is over 70% of our town budget, family time is something that is more important, it can never be replaced. School courses can.
